Saw Doctors in NYC

Hi, I'm back. Thank you Ronan for covering for me.

Well, after a horrible, absolutely awful day of traveling on Thursday (we'll discuss it over pints sometime. In the meantime, let me advise that if given a choice between walking and taking US Airways on a cross country trip, choose the walk.) the Saw Doctors at Irving Plaza in Manhattan were fantastic. Maybe it was because it was opening night of the new tour, maybe it was because of a wildly enthusiastic New York crowd, maybe it was a revitalized band roster including, on a couple songs, Davy's teenage son (the subject of my favorite track on the new CD "Your Guitar"), or maybe a combination of all that. But band stalwarts Davy Carton and Leo Moran, joined by Anthony Thistlethwaite, former saxophonist for the Waterboys, Fran Breen on drums, and Kevin Duffy on the keyboards showed no signs of the wear, tear and malaise that you might expect from a band that in one form or another has been hard at it for 20 years now. I'd be hard pressed to say who was having more fun, band or audience.

In the Irish Fest biz, we hear a lot about certain bands or solo performers who, while they may be great musicians and recording artists, simply aren't "performers" and can't hold an audience from the stage. No such trouble here. The Docs had the crowd in the palms of their hands from start to finish, with a mix of songs from the new The Cure and the 15 years of recordings that preceded it. Just a wonderful night, capped off with good and hopefully productive conversations with Docs' manager Ollie Jennings, and agent Tim Drake about getting the band here for the 2007 Irish Fest.

Special thanks to Tim Drake of the Roots Agency for his hospitality at the show. Don't forget to see another of Tim's clients, The Glengarry Bhoys this Wednesday here in town. He also counts KCIF performers Hothouse Flowers and Luka Bloom among his roster.

And endless thanks and love to KC Irish Fest Backstage Boss Tim Driscoll and his lovely wife, longtime KCIF vendor (Driscoll Designs) Mary Pat Driscoll for housing, guiding, transporting, feeding, entertaining and keeping us from ever EVER getting thirsty over the long weekend.

And now, fair is fair. How was Shamrockin'?

Shamrockin was another great success from the infamous Erin K and the Kansas City Parade Committee! 7 Nations was awesome ..... can't wait to see them again at KCIF and the Elder's were equally awesome. Kudos th Erin.

Erin K looked AWESOME in her extra large 'Bobby Brown'( Can I supersize my meal? or Can I get that shirt in a medium, please?) at Shamrockin'-it was a GREAT GREAT night and I loved every minute of it, it was a nice way to celebrate my first Mother's Day! Nice work Erin and all the St Pat's Parade folks. Good times!

Shamrockin was awesome. See my post at the Elders message board, whenever it decides to cooperate and let my post it. Or see my post in my music blog.
