Here are two things I know for sure about The Kelihans:
1. They are one of the best Irish pub bands you'll find anywhere.
2. They love cheap tacos.
I know the first one because I've been watching this band since a long ago day when Ed Scanlon and I went to check out them out at a local bar to see if we wanted to book them for the first Kansas City Irish Fest back in 2003. They were then and are now a blue collar band-gritty, genuine and hard working. Their shows at that first rain-soaked fest, standing ankle deep in the mud, playing acoustic because we couldn't power up the stage for fear of electrocution are the stuff of legend. Their set at last year's fest was one of the best I saw from any band all weekend, period.
I know the second one because it's Tuesday. Tuesdays are dollar taco day at Cancun Fiesta Fresh in Westport where I often meet Mrs. Bloggy for lunch, as I did a short while ago. And the Kelihans, or some assortment of them anyway, are always there. Always. The first Irish band powered by Mexican food.
So I'm declaring them the band of the day. Catch them Friday night and Sunday afternoon at this year's Kansas City Irish Fest. Catch them next Tuesday in the taco line. I'll see you there, too.
