Planning Ahead

Get your pen. No, not that one. The red one. Go to your calendar. Draw a big circle around Saturday, May 3rd. If you keep a digital calendar, do whatever you do to mark dates on your Blackberry or Blueberry or Crunchberry or whatever. Mark that date. You're busy that night.

That night the Missouri Valley Folklife Society closes out their season with a great show when Chicago based band Gan Bua comes to town. Or, maybe Chicago based band Bua comes to town. They seem to have dropped the Gan from their name along the way, which is just as well. Gan Bua means "Without Talent", and that is the most wildly inaccurate band name since 10,000 Maniacs.

Jackie Moran (bodhran, percussion, banjo), Chris Bain (fiddle), Sean Gavin (uillean pipes, flute, tin whistles), Brian Hart (vocals, concertina, tin whistle), and Brian Miller (guitar) comprise the band and you'll find three All-Ireland champions in that line up. Since their CD showed up at Irish Fest HQ, I've been playing holes in it. If you love imaginatively, expertly played Irish traditional music, don't miss this show. And besides, you've already got it marked on your calendar.

May 3, 2008, Saturday at 8:00 PM at the Community Christian Church, 4601 Main St. Tickets are $20.00 general admission, $17.00 for MVFS or Crosscurrents members, Students (all ages) $5.00, Six years and under free. Buy your tickets on-line right here.
