Not many people know this, but I'm a proud Mexican American. By marriage, anyway. Sort of.
See, my aunt Frances McCunniff married José Severo Chavez (better know as Uncle Joe) in the 1950's and I have a whole passel of Chavez cousins out west. One of them, Patrick, is a regular Irish Fest attendee and volunteer. So as a proud sort-of Mexican American, I'm muy excitado that festival season here at Crown Center is about to open with the 8th annual Fiesta Kansas City.
May 9th through 11th, 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday, noon to 11 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 10 p.m. on Sunday. Featured this year are Tejano pioneers Little Joe y La Familia. Band leader Joe Hernandez has been described as the "King of The Brown Sound" which is a pretty great thing to be described as. I'd like to be described as something cool like that. The "King Of The Green Scene" or "The Dean of The Green Mujahedeen." Or maybe not. Anyway, the rest of the schedule seems to feature a band called TBA who must be pretty good because they're playing like 40 times.
So, mis hermanos y hermanas mexicanos, make plans now to start a great summer of festivals at Fiesta Kansas City. Celebre como un mexicano. Como mí.

Mad Spanish skills, hombre!
Well, you know, it's my blood, vato. Or my cousins' blood anyway, which might as well be mine.
How about Salsa Celtica next year?
