Beer Costs Could Spike Due To Hops Shortage
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - There are worldwide shortages of one of the main ingredients in beer - hops - and that could make the price of a six-pack jump.
The hops shortage was created by crop failure, fire and disease, which chocked the supply of the little green plant.
The shortage has a big effect on larger brewers who buy tons of hops on contract, such as Kansas City's Boulevard Brewery.
Typically, beer prices increase each year to account for inflation.
"A pound of hops usually runs between $4 and $10 a pound. And we might pay as much as $20, $25 a pound," said John McDonald, founder and president of Boulevard Brewery.
McDonald said the price of a six-pack of Boulevard beer might go up by 50 cents if the hops market stays volatile. - KMBC.com
Damn. If only I'd known that before I wasted all that money on food and clothing for the kids. In case you were wondering, and I know you were, there are no plans to raise beer prices at the 2008 Irish Fest.
