Long ago there was a magical place. It was called Molloy Bros. Irish Pub and it was a home away from home for some of us. I helped build it. I hung speakers, varnished wood, wallpapered bathrooms, built the big chalkboard, designed the logo and menus and poured a few pints, too. My late dad's picture hung on the wall of the snug, along side the portraits of other deceased dads of other regulars. It was the kind of place you could go and always find a familiar face, where you never had to be asked what you were drinking. There was a time when on Friday afternoons, Brian or Ed or Tim might send an e-mail that just said "Pints?", just that one word, and you knew that it meant "meet you at Molloy's after work, if not sooner".
I miss it, probably more than it's healthy for a man to miss a bar.
Of course, the space is still there and it's still a bar. A good bar too, called The Record Bar. And on January 6th, much to delight of sentimental dorks like me, the Record Bar will be an Irish pub once more when Irish Fest's own The Elders take to the corner stage. It will be crowded, which Molloy's seldom was and the bartenders won't know my name. And my dad's photo is gone. But it'll be great and I'll be there. You should be too.
Come early. Trust me on that.

I miss Molloy's too! Maybe not as much as you....but between Bob Walkenhorst and the Elders (and various other bands) I had gotten to the point where instead of telling people I was heading to Kansas City, I told them I "was going to Molloy's."
Except when it was Irish Fest time, and then I was just too giddy to clearly tell them where I was going anyway....
Did you hear Mairtin from Fuchsia is playing support?
