Our good friend and Irish Fest performer Máirtín de Cógáin of Fuchsia Band fame was kind enough to drop a line on his way to his gig at a castle in Tuscany (nice work if you can get it) to let us know that his film about the Irish Civil War, The Wind That Shakes The Barley, is in the running for the prestigious Palme d'Or award at this year's Cannes Film Festival in the South of France.
The movie, by acclaimed director Ken Loach, will compete with Pedro Almodovar's Volver and Sofia Coppola's Marie-Antoinette for the festival's top honor. We're hoping to get the rights to show the film at the Kansas City Irish Fest in September. You'll hear about it right here if we're successful. Máirtín began work on the film as a bit player, but so impressed director Loach that his part was expanded to include speaking parts, and singing parts as well.
