Band Announcement, 3/6

Ah Sunday...not at work, taking it easy, sleeping late. Let's go back to that wonderful time for a retro band announcement. After all, tomorrow's Monday...and, simultaneously, Tuesday.

New, but not new. A rookie Irish Fester, only isn't. Confused? Don't be. I'm talking about today's (Sunday, remember?) band. For the first time, sort of, at the Kansas City Irish Fest, The Colin Grant Band.

See, the band's never played here. But Colin has. A few times. Colin you may recall was the stellar fiddleist for fest favs Pogey. He's left that band and started his own great group. Which happens to include fellow Pogey alum Darren McMullen who's also played here. But not with this band. 'Cause they're new.

The band describes themselves this way:

"Lingering somewhere amidst the rich, soulful roots of traditional Cape Breton music and the grooves of a thousand branches of rock and funk, Colin Grant embarks on his latest project: a dynamic and thoughtful mingling of beats and melodies from an extensive host of musical influences. Far from the awkward malaise of mohawked bag-pipers and kilted punks, the Colin Grant Band has created a kind of Celtic fusion that is as much Steely Dan and Yes as it is Ashley MacIsaac. While the lively sound never strays too distantly from its Celtic roots, the Colin Grant Band has found an open ear in everyone from indie scenesters to blue-haired bingo stampers."

How they resisted calling the band "The Blue Haired Bingo Stampers", I'll never know. But I do know, as you do too from past experience that Colin and Darren are consummate performers and this will be a great addition to the line up. Let's meet them, shall we?
