Property Dreams Sold Down River

The Irish Independent: It is a thought-provoking symbol of times gone past.

An artist has floated a collection of green and red houses on the Liffey in Dublin to symbolise the "ghost estates" which have emerged following the downturn in the construction industry.

'Liffeytown' by Fergal McCarthy will stay on the river between the Halpenny bridge and O'Connell bridge for the duration of the Absolut Fringe festival which runs to September 25.

The installation is styled as the "end of an era" of "badly planned, badly designed, disposable architecture" which came about during the building boom, the organisers say.

'Liffeytown' is said to represent the end of these estates which have instead been replaced by a "more sensitively attuned city".

The piece, which can be seen either side of the river, lights up at night and gives the impression of a series of Monopoly houses floating on the Liffey.
