KC School of Irish Music Teacher Concert/IMCCVolunteer Recognition
Sun. Jan. 24, 2 – 4 pm; $5 suggested donation for adults. All welcome.
Come enjoy wonderful traditional Irish music by the instructors from the KC School of Irish Music Turlach Boylan (flute), Doug Goodhart (bodhran) and Dave Agee (fiddle). At the end of the concert we will recognize our 2009 Irish Center Volunteers who keep the place open and the lights on to let us all enjoy the Irish Center. A reception follows.

Irish Trivia Night Sat. Feb. 6
Happy hour at 6 pm, contest - MC'd by Micheal Mahoney - at 7 pm
Come share Irish knowledge, heritage and “craic” at the third annual Irish Trivia Night sponsored by Guiness and McGonigles. Get a team of 6 for $100 entry fee for more fun than you can imagine and Irish beverages! Don't have a whole team? We'll take individuals and make teams!
Also non-knowledge based bonus questions and prizes for best-dressed table, best "uniforms" team name and cheer!

The Irish Hedge School Experience Sat. Feb. 13
1 – 3 pm, fees
Hedge schools arose in Ireland when school was forbidden to the Irish, so teachers taught whenever and wherever they could, bringing the word to the people.
For this unique workshop, local expert teachers Peter Reilly Adams, Renata Henley and Mike O’Laughlin provide a history of hedge schools, including: Wild Geese-Flight of the Earls and the Civil War era. Session options include: Beginning Irish Language Notes; Irish History Through Song; Irish Family History, DNA Testing, Rare Books and Sean Nós (Irish singing style).

Can still join Irish Gaelic and Tinwhistle classes

Irish Genealogy Workshop Sat. Feb. 20
9 am, also March 27, April 17, May 15. Feb. 20 focuses on the recently released 1911 Irish Census and how to find and use U.S. and other Census records.

Youth Talent and Art Showcase, Sun. Feb. 28
2 pm, suggested donation $5 for adults
All youth ages 6 – 18 are invited to sing, play an instrument, dance, give a reading; share an original drawing or painting, photograph or scupture – anything Irish related!

Annual Irish Gala Fri. March 5
Featuring Eileen Ivers, honoring Dan Ryan Hesse
6 pm, Muehlebach Towers, Honoring Dan Ryan Hesse, CEO Sprint, as the John J. Sullivan Jr. Foundation Humanitarian award winner and featuring Grammy award-winning Irish fiddler Eileen Ivers & Immigrant Soul. Come join us for this high Irish event of the Season!

Missouri Irish Brigade Encampment Sat. Mar. 6
11 am – 3 pm, free; 2 pm, Col. James Crofutt gives his first-person narrative of Missouri ’s 7th “Irish” Brigade.
Come see, hear and experience up close Civil War re-enactors who made up Missouri ’s Missouri ’s Irish Brigade. Medical demonstrations, real Civil War artifacts, rolls of the 7th Brigade (look up your ancestors) and live period music. Men and women with authentic firearms, tents, equipment and dress will share their knowledge and enthusiasm of this part of Kansas City’s regional Irish history.

St. Patrick's Day Family Fair Wed. Mar. 17
10 am – 4 pm, Free entrance, $1 tickets for some activities. Warm refreshments.
What do you do with the whole family on St. Pat’s?
Bring them to the Irish Center before or after the Parade! There will be family-friendly games, crafts, live music, contests and refreshments all day! While everyone’s having fun, we’ll also learn something about our Irish heritage!
Free or $1 activities include face painting, make Celtic art stained glass page, plant a shamrock to take home, Irish balloon figures, Irish karaoke, music, storytelling, your name in Gaelic, Reddest Head contest, scavenger hunt. Workshops include Irish dance, penny whistle and bodhran (Celtic drum).

Sharing older Irish history, Society for Creative Anachronism friends bring weaving, chain mail, storytelling, harp, games and more to life to share with all.


Peace in Ireland Recognition Sun. April 11
2 pm, free, In recognition of the 1998 Good Friday Agreement between the Republic and Northern Ireland, all are invited to learn more about efforts to create peace and the history and the current state of the conflicts. Watch this space for presenters and more information. Sponsored by Children for Peace in Ireland. All welcome.
