Band Announcements, Plural

Friday, BA day. Today a returning favorite, a variation on same and a new member of the family.

So excited to announce that recent Irish Music Association award winners Cara will be headed back our way in 2010. One of the best Irish trad bands anywhere and delightful people too, Cara was a huge hit in 2009 at KCIF. If you didn't catch them then, don't miss this chance. As a side note, in our performers merchandise tent last year, Cara sold everything they had, including a few CDs with broken cases to fans who couldn't get enough of the great music. So maybe buy your Cara stuff early this time around.

BA, two...and stay with me here. Joining us for the first time sort of in a half way in 2010 is 2Duos, half of which is made up of two members of Cara, Gudrun Walther and Jürgen Treyz, they being one Duo, the other being Scots Claire Mann and Aaron Jones. So two Germans, two Scots playing traditional Irish and Scottish music, here in middle America and two of them,  the German Duo also playing with Cara, our first band of the day only at different times. With me? Maybe we'll just listen.
And, because I love you, band announcement 3 for the day. Making their first appearance here in KC in September, the oddly named, beautiful sounding band The Guggenheim Grotto. Hard to pin down labels and categories for this band of Dubliners. Folk pop? Folk rock? Pop Rocks? How about let's just call it great music from Ireland. Or as the Boston Globe said "In a musical tavern of light beers and sugary cordials, this stuff is pure stout." Check them out and please welcome them to the 2010 Kansas City Irish Fest. Happy Friday everybody.

Great bands! So excited 2 Duos is going to be there. We have their CD and both the Celtic and German tunes on it are great! And Cara is always wonderful. Thanks for the BA - it helps during the long cold Iowa winters.

Great stuff... and a great reflection of something amazing that's happening right now in the Ceol. 2Duos is just one example. It's called 'Collaborations'. The Irish Echo has announced their top 10 CDs of the year today and you can see what's happening now. It's awesome. It's no longer all about 'the power groups' with one agent, one handler, one destiny for the band members. It's about people 'mixing it up' all over the place and playing on each others works. It's a win-win for the Ceol and all listeners. John Doyle is probably the BEST example of the 'new movement' towards open collaboration. John is very likely to win a Grammy this weekend along with Liz Carroll for their famous 'collaboration' but John can actually be heard on no less than EIGHT CDs released this year alone, including the one he recorded in 2 days with Jerry Holland, just 3 weeks before Jerry lost his battle with cancer. It's no wonder that Irish Echo has also announced a few hours ago that John Doyle is their 'Entertainer of the Year'. It's not just the talent. It's not just his character and how he represents the Ceol. It's about his approach to performing and 'breaking down the barriers' of the traditional recording industry. It's about making a living, fer sure, but it's more that. It's about creating new opportunities for collaboration and carving out a new space for the Ceol going forward. I expect we will see even MORE of the collaborations represented in this year's Irish Echo top 10 choices in the years ahead. It WORKS.
Congratulations to all the Irish Echo award winners!

Correction... The Irish Echo award that went specifically to John Doyle was 'Traditional Musician of the Year' and not 'Entertainer of the Year'. Sorry 'bout that.

The amazing collaboration called 'Pride of New York' took the number 1 spot but look at all the other 'collaborations' on this

Wow...that's a hell of a list.

I was listening to John Doyle on the Thistle and Shamrock last week or the week before. What a talent.

Did John Doyle play at KCIF with Eileen Eivers a few years ago?

No, she had a guitar player, whose name escapes me at the moment, who is a friend of a friend of mine and the two got to reconnect at KCIF that year.

I believe John did play with Eileen for one of her two appearances here. Not sure which but you don't forget an amazing left handed guitar player like Doyle.
