We've had some amazingly talented artists interpret our shamrock-spotted Irish Fest cow over the years, and none more so than our 2009 illustrator Maja Andersen. Maja's whimsical cow with the smiling Irish dancer on her back has been getting rave reviews, deservedly so.
Now I'm an illustrator myself as you might know - I painted last year's fiddling cow- so I know a little bit about this job. And I'll tell you, the hardest part of what all us Irish Fest cow artists do isn't coming up with the concept, the composition or even creating the art itself. It's managing the models. I'm here to tell you, I had a hell of a time getting last year's cow to stand on her hind legs and hold that fiddle. I had to glue that little bird to the bow to keep it from flying away. I know Maja had a slightly easier time since her cow got to stay on all fours as is their nature, but still...it can be rough going.
Maja happens to be an old friend of mine and while she was painting this year's cow I stopped by her studio and snapped a picture for you so you can see what I mean:So when you see Maja at Irish Fest, give her a little pat on the back, maybe buy her a beer. She worked hard to bring you that cow.
