Among the hundreds of thousands of people I saw at the Browne's Irish Street Fair on Saturday were Tom and Nancy Shawver of Bloomsday Books. Tom and Nancy may be the nicest people in the world. They certainly top the Kansas City list. They are also two of the biggest supporters of Irish events in town. If you've suffered through life to this point without having made their acquaintance, I pity you and offer this opportunity to end your Shawverless ways.
Bloomsday Books presents, this coming Saturday their wonderful annual celebration of their namesake holiday Bloomsday. This year's party is at the Plaza Branch of the Kansas City Public Library beginning at 5:30 PM. Bloomsday, as if you didn't know, commemorates that day, June 16th, 1904 on which the events of James Joyce's novel Ulysses unfold, as protagonist Leoplold Bloom wanders turn of the century Dublin. The local celebration includes a live Irish music performance by Eddie "Dedalus" Delahunt, flowing pints of Boulevard beer, and as always live performance of excerts of the play "Bloomsday Dublin" 16 June" by Lary Opitz, adapted form the novel.
This is a truly great event and I can't encourage you enough to stop by. Eddie kicks things off at 5:30, the dramatic performance begins at 7:00. The Plaza Library is at 4801 Main. Bloomsday is at www.BloomsdayBooks.com.
