Galway Girl

I once made the mistake of telling an ardent Elders fan that I liked Steve Earle's (original) version of The Galway Girl better than the Elders' cover of it. I barely escaped with my life.

Don't get me wrong, The Elders do a great job with it. I love their version. Love love love it. It's a great song, let's face it. It would takes some like me singing it to ruin it. Irish Fest director Ronan Collins, back home in Ireland recently, sent me the version currently blowing up back there. Here's Mundy, with the great Sharon Shannon (who played on Steve Earle's original recording) on the box. Where does it rank? You tell me. Try to overlook that the girl has neither hair of black or eyes of blue.

With all due respect to the incredibly talented Joe Miquelon on the keyboards, I still miss Randy Riga whaling away on that big ol' piano accordian of his singing in that gravelly voice of his backed by Steve (or was it Brent?) on the mandolin and four strong voices. As much as I love the sound of an exceptionally well-played button accordian, the bigger box simply has a bigger sound.
And you're right, having the song intercut with video featuring a blonde makes no sense whatsoever.

While I like this version just fine, The old-school Elders version just holds so many memories! Back when they played at Molloy's and there wasn't even a line to get in...I'm honored to say I was there!!

This video had so much cheese, I'm going to be bound up for days.....
