Where To Volunteer, Part 3A

I told you why I think you should volunteer in the Irish Fest Children's Area. But what do I know, right? I haven't been a kid since the Ford administration. So directly from the young members of the Irish Fest Kids Club, here are the top 11 reasons why you should volunteer with the kids this year:

1. If you are an adult, it brings out your inner child.
2. If you are in school you can get good service hours.
3. You know that you have helped a great cause - kids are our best cause!
4. It is a lot of fun to work with kids.
5. It really makes you feel good when you put a smile on a child's face or when you see them laughing and having a fun time.
6. You can really enjoy hosting games for the kids.
7. You meet a lot of new people and make new friendships.
8. You get to review and critique the workshops.
9. It is a lot of fun to set-up each morning.
10.You get your face painted.

Top Reason: For a few hours of work - you get to be a kid again.

I couldn't have said it better myself. Sign up tomorrow!

May I make a suggestion? Have actual JOBS or assignments for the volunteers. Last year my friend and I volunteered for the children's area after much bally-hoo as being the area of need. There were too many volunteers and we were redundant and in the way, as were others. Finally we had to overtake someone else's job, actually, just to have something to do.

I know it's hard to know how many people will really show up as volunteers or guests and better to have too many than not enough.

We tried to find another assignment and met the typical Irish disorganization. I don't mean to be critical, really and truly, just that we felt superfluous and very awkward.

Here's an idea: volunteer for a different time besides SATURDAY AFTERNOON!

I'm sorry you had a bad experience with the children's area last year. We have never been staffed until last year for a bit on Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately, we were understaffed the rest of the time. We would love to give one job, but based on being understaffed, the orientation provides some training about each area in case we need a bingo caller or stage manager, and we have always multi-tasked. Last year on Saturday, we had a second problem with volunteers coming in after our orientation which caused confusion for us. Give us another chance, we always work through our problems and having enough volunteers is one we would love to have again, having more when we are so short in the evenings or Sunday is even better. Thanks for your feedback and email me at kcifchildrens@everstkc.net for additional communication. Shawn

Great feedback! And thank you so much for sharing it instead of just walking away unhappy and not coming back. I think Shawn already made the point but I will reiterate....I think it just may have been the shift you were working because it does seem that each year the only shift that gets filled in the childrens area is the Saturday afternoon one. And maybe we just get so excited about it that we overfill it. :-) So thank you truly for your feedback and being a supported of our fest! We couldn't do it without you guys!!! Erin

Thank you all so much for not being offended and for your explanations. Of course I will give it another go! It's my priviledge to work with such cool people!
