Heartfelt congratulations to the 2008 Grand Marshal of the downtown Kansas City St. Patrick's Day parade, our good friend Danny O'Mara.
You'd be hard pressed to name a more deserving recipient of the honor, because Dan, along with his alter-ego Brogeen Malarkey (leprechaun, ret.) has done more over the years to promote the St. Patrick's Day parade in Kansas City than just about anyone. As Brogeen, he's put smiles on the faces of countless kids around the area through selfless charitable work and as O'Mara, he's helped feed Kansas City's less fortunate through his work with Harvesters, the local food pantry. He's a past winner of the Kansas City Irish Fest's "Compulsive Volunteer Award" and a genuinely great guy. Please join all of us here at Irish Fest in a round of well deserved applause for everybody's favorite leprechaun and the 2008 Grand Marshal, Dan O'Mara.

Speaking of Irish caricatures...sheesh!
I think he/she/it meant to say Irish "characters."
No, I meant caricature - "a distorted representation to produce a ridiculous effect"
No, "CARICATURE":
noun, verb, -tured, -tur·ing.
–noun
1. a picture, description, etc., ludicrously exaggerating the peculiarities or defects of persons or things.
2. the art or process of producing such pictures, descriptions, etc.
3. any imitation or copy so distorted or inferior as to be ludicrous.
Here's another definition for you:
Altruism: (āl'trōō-ĭz'əm) n.
Unselfish concern for the welfare of others; selflessness. Which is exactly what Danny O'Mara exhibited for many, many years in his guise as Brogeen Malarkey, bringing a lot of the joy and fun of St. Patrick's Day to countless sick kids in Kansas City hospitals. Yes, it's a caricature. And he's done more good for our community with that caricature than most of us ever will.
Put THAT in your pipe and smoke it!
"As St.Patrick's Day season begins, we're going to be bombarded with stereotypical images of the Irish, as well as our own neighbors parading or partying decked out in the green tinsel wigs, huge leprechaun hats and other such shamrockery that I mentioned yesterday. Some of you have strong feelings that such "cartooning" of the Irish people and culture is highly insulting and offensive."
Didn't this blog ask for opinions on the aforementioned "'cartooning'of the Irish people"?
Sure it did. And I published every single one I got, including my own. Is there a problem?
