Ten Don't-Miss Things This Year At Irish Fest, Part 7

7. John Spillane. John sings a song he wrote that asks "Will we be brilliant or what?" That question is easy to answer when you're talking about a John Spillane show. He will be brilliant.

One of the most gifted songwriters to come out of Ireland in recent years, John is a true original on stage. Songs made up out his own imagination, ladies and gentlemen, start to finish, some fierce depressing, so far so good. Fair play to John. He's funny, quirky, massively entertaining. He's a talented guitarist and singer but at his core, in the great tradition of his native country, John is a story teller, a shanachie. Listen to The Mad Woman of Cork. Listen to Magic Nights In The Lobby Bar. Listen to Dunnes Store Girl. Just make sure you find the time this weekend to listen to John Spillane, and you'll see what I mean.

What struck me most last year is how many of the other artists that played KCIF last year came out and watched John. I have never seen so many other bands in one area to watch another artist. That says something about the talent.
