Some of us in leadership at the Kansas City Irish Fest are not the freshest biscuits in the box anymore. President Ed Scanlon, for example, is nearly 94 years old. We worry sometimes about the next generation, the youngsters who will some day, God willing, keep Irish Fest growing and strong in years and decades to come. So I was heartened to get a card in the mail the other day from young Seth Jones, age 13. I'd met Seth's parents at a social gathering not long ago and when his father told me that Seth had a penchant for all things green and gold, and Irish Fest specifically, I sent him home with an Irish Fest T-Shirt and a couple spare CDs from past KCIF bands to give Seth. Fine lad that he is, raised right and a credit to his parents, Seth sent a thank you note immediately, wherein he wrote this:
"When people ask me what my favorite holidays are, I tell them 'Christmas and the Irish Fest!' If there is anything I can do to help at the Fest I am very willing! The Irish Fest is the highlight of my year!"
And I worry a little less today.
