The review I mentioned yesterday of Eddie "Hold The Glitz" Delahunt's CD "Original Sing" from "Sing Out" magazine is below:
"If the idea of an Irishman in Kansas City strikes you as odder than barbequed ribs on a Gaeltacht pub menu, give a listen to Eddie Delahunt and you’ll change your mind. This is a delightful collection of folk songs done well, hold the glitz. Delahunt’s warm voice, gravelly around the edges and big and open as the prairie, manages to exude the comfort of an Irish peat fire and the home-spun qualities of Mid-America. Most of the songs are Delahunt originals and he favors rolling guitar strums through which Brett Gibson’s snappy accordion notes pop. There’s a nice mix of songs: the tongue-twisting, dancy cadences of “Travelin’,” the mouth music sessions feel of “Tradition,” and the obligatory homesick “I Wish I Was In Ireland.” Songs such as “Caherconree” and “Love Is Pleasin’” evoke Eric Bogle’s rural-laced arrangements, as effect enhanced by the grit in Delahunt’s voice. Conversely, the gorgeous and bittersweet “Weather The Storm” would make a fabulous bookend to Dougie MacLean’s “Ready For The Storm,” as both songs take us inside the mind of sailors lost in thought as the gale rages. Delahunt is also MacLean-like on “Forget Me Not My Love.” a song of simple and honest emotion. This is a beautifully done project that deserves a wide audience. --R. Weir, Sing Out"
Fair play to you, Eddie. Well deserved praise. And you can hear he of the "warm voice, gravelly around the edges and big and open as the prairie" this very night at O'Dowd's Little Dublin on the Plaza, 8:00 or so. And you might want to pick up this CD while you're there.
