The Kansas City Royals are in first place in the AL Central. Yes, technically everybody's in first place in the AL Central since it's opening day, but still. When you live in the land of the 100 loss season, you take what you can get.

The Irish, of course, dominated baseball's early days as waves of immigrant boys took up the game seen as quintessentially American. That proud history is represented in Kansas City this afternoon by Royals captain Mike Sweeney. And baseball has a foothold in Ireland itself today, as shown in John Fitzgerald's great film The Emerald Diamond. You can learn more about that film here.
