Irish Fest's Terrace Stage, otherwise known as the Crown Center Ice Terrace, Kansas City’s only public, outdoor ice skating rink, will be open as usual this year.
Visitors to the Ice Terrace will have a birdseye view of Crown Center Square’s renovation this winter. While bulldozers restrict access to the Grand Boulevard level of the Square, they won’t keep skaters from the rink, which opens for its 33rd season on November 4.
The Crown Center Ice Terrace, which first opened November 26, 1973, attracted more than 50,000 skaters last season. It is built on top of the Crown Center parking garage. More than 420 rows of pipes, placed 3 inches apart, lie within the 105-by-105-foot rink. These pipes carry freon to cool the rink's surface. After cleaning the surface of the rink, the cement surface is slowly cooled to about 16 degrees, a process that takes about two days. It takes about 24 hours to lay ice on the rink. Water is sprayed onto the surface every hour, allowing it to freeze in thin layers. The ideal thickness is around 1.5 inches. An environmentally safe white paint is then sprayed on to give the ice its milky white color.
Picture, if you will, Enter The Haggis performing on 1.5 inches of milky ice.
Handy Irish Phrase: Nach deas an pictiúir é sin? (Isn't that a pretty picture)
