As we end a year's preparation for Irish Fest under sunny skies, to the South of us our brothers and sisters in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and all along the Gulf Coast are struggling to survive and recover after the devastation of hurricane Katrina. When you come to our wonderful celebration of Irish heritage and pride here in Kansas City, please take a minute to notice the big boxes brightly painted in the Irish tricolor placed around the festival grounds. The boxes are there in the hope that the Irish, and the friends of the Irish, in Kansas City will rise to this terrible occasion and help, in the most direct and simple way possible by dropping a dollar or two or ten into those boxes. After the fest, we'll be giving that money, every dime of it, to the American Red Cross to aid the victims of the storm.
So on behalf of my fellow board members, our dedicated staff and our wonderful volunteers, I welcome you to what we hope will show you a little of the soul of Ireland in the heart of America. Hoist a pint, marvel at a fiddler, laugh at a comedian, smile at a child. Dance a jig if the mood strikes you, we won't laugh. It's going to be a great weekend for the Irish and their friends and we're so thrilled that you're joining us.
Sláinte!
