The best laid plans often go awry. So we get to KCI in plenty of time, with everything, having remembered to bring everything, ready for security, and a leisurely wait for our flight - what could possibly go wrong? An air traffic controller's hold, that's what! We were flying into Newark and had just an hour to get from terminal A to terminal C which, even with enough time, involved something like a bus, a tax, and a rickshaw. How come no terminal Z-at least it might be closer to A than C if the terminals were arranged in a circle.
So the check-in person looked for alternate flights because we were not going to make our Newark connecting flight. What she found was going to Chicago via Sanduski, then to San Francisco for a hop to Bangladesh, a
Camel ride to somewhere, then boarding a boat in the Dead Sea and arriving in Dublin sometime in 2012. We opted to go to Newark and pray on the way.
Prayers do work and the Irish can be lucky as when we arrived in Newark our connecting flight had been delayed. We had to rush like crazy to get there and we were the very last ones on the plane but we made it.
The map above (follow the pink) shows where we went while in Dublin today for the few hours we had free. We walked to Grafton Street which has a very definite Westport/Plaza feel to it with loads of young people, the incredible variety of dress, street people, the myriad and varied shops, and musicians. It also had overtones of Diagonon Alley. A coach tour later brought us to Georgian Houses, the GPO (look it up), Christ's Church Cathedral, St. Patrick's Cathedral, and a stop that enabled us to go through the National Museum where we learned more about bodies preserved in bogs than we needed to - but very interesting. We also found out just how talented in goldsmithing our Bronze age ancestors were.
The day was brought to a close by a very good meal, some Smithwicks, good conversation, and an overwhelming tiredness. I was going to blog this on Saturday but the hotel we are in doesn't have free Internet and Joan wasn't spending 20 euro for an hour's use and got no argument from me.
