Last year Cara, the incredible band from Germany blew KC audiences away with their Irish Fest sets. It took us, oh about 5 seconds to decide that they had to come back for an encore in 2010. And now from Cara fiddler Gudrun Walther comes some exciting news of a band personnel change.
Founding band members Sandra Gunkel and Claus Steinort will be leaving the group to concentrate on their growing family. And so, says Gudrun, “what we did was a kind of 'casting' and also some rehearsals during the past weeks and we are very happy to say that we found two very talented young musicians who are also very nice people and fit into the band from day 1. The new Claus is Ryan Murphy from Cork, Ireland, and the new Sandra is Jeana Leslie from the Orkney Islands and living in Glasgow, Scotland.
Ryan is a true master of the uilleann pipes (he holds an unbelievable total of 7 All-Ireland-Championships, being only 20 years old!). Jeana also won numerous awards, the most recent one being the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award in 2008 - the rehearsals were very inspiring and exciting.
And yet we will keep the Cara sound with two female leads and guitar/piano backings, her being a lovely soprano and all that, so the Cara fans will not be disappointed.”
If you didn’t catch Irish Music Award winners Cara in 2009, whatever you do, don’t miss the return engagement. An interesting bit of video from last year below. Sure it seems like only yesterday...
