Gala Friday, Now With Puppies

A reminder that if you're looking for a little Irish Fest preview this week, tickets are still available for Friday's Irish Center annual gala featuring the great Eileen Ivers and the dancers of the O'Riada School. Individual tickets are $150 or buy a table for 10 for $1500, which is a savings of...well, nothing. But at least then you're sitting with 9 friends. So no, it's not the least expensive night you'll ever spend out on the town. But when you consider that you'll get a great meal, world class entertainment, a chance to hobnob with all of Kansas City's Gaelic movers and shakers (and the yahoos at the Irish Fest table), and support the Irish Center in all the good work they do, it's money well spent.

Sprint boss Dan Hesse will be honored with the John J. Sullivan Jr. Foundation Humanitarian Award. And there'll be an auction where you can bid on, among other things, a puppy.

A puppy. You can't stay away. Look at the puppy! Oh, puppy.

Dear Dan,

I bow to no one in my admiration for all things Irish in Kansas City, including the Irish Center. However, fund raising organizations all over are ceasing to offer auctions of animals as a part of their activities. The acquirement of a companion animal should be a well thought out process, which takes into consideration the needs of the animal, as well as the needs of his potential family. I would hope that the Irish Center would reconsider this particular auction item, if not immediately this year, at least in the future.

Sincerely,
Martha Kiley

Well said and a good point. If it matters, they have begun the auction already through their website, limiting perhaps the odds of an impulse purchase.
