Where You From?

Okay, so you've got that O of Mc at the start of your last name. Or you've heard the stories of how your mom thinks maybe great granddad left his farm in Mayo or maybe Meath for Missouri or maybe it was great granddad leaving Monaghan for Michigan. Or you've got that flaming head of red hair and you've always loved potatoes and fiddles and you just feel Irish. How can you find out for sure where your roots lay? Here's how.

Irish Fest Heritage queen Barbara McTygue Scanlon will conduct a series of workshops on genealogy at the Irish Museum and Cultural Center in Union Station. The first workshop will be on January 16th at 9AM, they will be free to museum members and $5.00 for non-members.

The January workshop will be how to get started with your genealogy and an in-depth look at Irish names. Barbara will have some of her books from Ireland on Irish names for you to research on Saturday morning. The February workshop will explore how and why to work with census records, both US and the newly released 1911 Irish census.

Barbara has been researching her own deep Irish roots for over 40 years. She is a member of the National Genealogical Society and has attend their conferences in Kansas City and Raleigh North Carolina. Barbara was one of the founding members of the Brookside Irish Fest and of course is the is the head of the Heritage and Genealogy committee for our own Kansas City Irish Fest.
