Pogues Winners

Our winners have been drawn from our pool of very smart people who answered the 5 quiz questions correctly. First, the answers.

1. What was the name of Pogues' lead singer Shane MacGowan’s pre-Pogues punk band? The band was The Nipple Erectors, often shortened to The Nips. Quite possibly the best band name in history.

2. What alias did he use while with that band? Shane O'Hooligan.

3. Which of the original (and also the current) Pogues line up were born in Ireland? Here's where we lost a lot of would be ticket winners. Shane MacGowan was born in Kent, England on Christmas Day, 1957. His parents were Irish and were visiting family in England when Shane was born. The MacGowans returned to Ireland and lived in North Tipperary until moving to London when Shane was 6. The names we were looking for were Philip (Ryan) Chevron and Terry Woods, both born in Dublin.

4. Declan MacManus, producer of the Pogue’s album "Rum, Sodomy and The Lash" is better known by what name? Fooled absolutely no one here. The answer of course is Elvis Costello, who would anger many Pogues fans by marrying original band member Cait O'Riordan (born in Nigeria, if you were wondering) and taking her away from the band.

5. How many fingers does the boxer on the cover of The Pogues' "Peace and Love" album have? Whether you said 9 plus two thumbs or 11 fingers, you got this one right. The words Peace and Love are tattooed on his digits.
