Pitch Out

Local entertainment weekly The Pitch is out today with its annual Best of Kansas City issue. They have both their editorial choices and readers' choices in dozens of sports, music, people, media, event and entertainment categories including Best Festival. And...we didn't make either the readers' or staff pick. Additionally, no Irish bands won anything (though my nephew's band did. Way to go, Tim!), no Irish pubs won anything (Gilhouly's did-"Best Place To Break Up With Someone"-but that place is about as Irish as McDonald's). All of which leads me, in this age of conspiracy theories, to conclude one thing: The Pitch doesn't like Irish people. I can draw no other conclusion, and I draw for a living.

It saddens me that 100+ years after the days of "No Irish Need Apply" that this blatant Hiberno-discrimination can take place right out in front of God and everybody. So I'm going to an Irish pub tonight, listen to some Irish music and tell anybody who'll listen that the Kansas City Irish Fest is Kansas City's best festival. You should do the same. That's my pitch.

The Pitch does not hold a corner on that market. How about the days when Hern Christopher was still employed by the Star and he would refer to the boards of both the Irish Fest and St. Pat's Parade as the Greenies. I would like to see any publications refer to the directors of the Martin Luther King Parade as the Blackies. It is clear that the Pitch is totally clueless to the happenings of the City. Perhaps the Festival is too squeaky clean for their liking. We have a children area and cater to families. The Pitch an kiss my Irish Arse.

So the KCIF isn't even the best KC festival over Labor Day weekend? Wow! I guess next year when I haul the whole family down from Omaha to KC over Labor Day we'll stay in Independence. One question, do they serve Guiness over there?

Why can't anyone spell Guinness correctly? Jeez.

It's much easier to spell Boulevard Dry Stout. I think I'll go have one.
