Did you drink anything at the Kansas City Irish Fest this year? Nah, me neither. But a lot of people did. Some 500 kegs of beer, among other things. And most of those people were assisted in their quest for refreshment by a smiling representative of a local Catholic parish (or a junior rugby squad). Those groups each took full ownership of their beverage tents, staffing them, decorating them, ringing bells or giving cheers when tips were given. In return for all that work they each were given a cash donation from Irish Fest, all the tips they collected and a percentage of the total sales of all beverage tents. It was a new service system for us and it was wonderful.
Before the fest at the mandatory bartender training sessions each of those groups was eligible for a new annual honor, the KCIF Spirit Award. The winner of that prize will hoist the Spirit Award pennant high over their tent next year and proclaim for all the world to see that they are the reigning Irish Fest Best Bar. The pennant is a slippery thing however and will travel from year to year as the competition continues.
The competition this year was fierce, but the votes are in. And the winner of the inaugural KC Irish Fest Spirit Award is...
...going to be announced here tomorrow.
