From Hotpress:

Damien Dempsey Scores His Second No.1

Damien Dempsey has raced to the top of the Irish Music DVDs charts this week, with his Party On – Live At Vicar Street offering.

It's Dempsey's second Irish No.1 – a remarkable achievement for the Donaghmede singer, in a week that also sees the chart debut of Girls Aloud, with Tangled Up – Live From the O2 2008 at No.6.

"We're delighted for Damien," enthuses Sony Music Ireland's Eithne Mooney. "He got to number one in 2005 with his Shots album, but To Hell Or Barbados and The Rocky Road just fell short of the top spot. Having a number one video shows what a huge fanbase he has here in Ireland."

Dempsey was one of the stars of The Music Show at the RDS, at the beginning of October, where his extraordinary ability as a live performer – captured superbly on Live At Vicar Street – was reaffirmed, in no uncertain terms.

"Damien was brilliant," Music Show co-ordinator and Hot Press Marketing Manager Mark Hogan commented. "He had the crowd eating out of the palm of his hand. He's always had a great voice, but he has really matured brilliantly as a performer – which is what makes the DVD such an important purchase for his fans."

Damien Dempsey revisits Vicar Street for a hugely anticipated live show on December 18.
Here's what that hit song sounded like at the Kansas City Irish Fest, 2008. Congrats Damo!

Looks like more people are acquiring that acquired taste!

You'll notice this "number one" status is in Ireland. It's unlikely he's gotten any more of a following in Kansas City than he had when he left the stage on Labor Day weekend.

A quote from an interview with Damien:

Q: What is the difference between the Irish and the American audiences?

Damien: The Irish will be a little bit drunker.

He gets the same kind of support here that he gets back home in Ireland.

"...unlikely he's gotten any more of a following..." my arse! As a fine whiskey is perfect for some and revolting to others (myself included), this guy's music is not for everyone. Just because you've not "acquired the taste" doesn't mean no one else has!
