Has It Been A Week Already?

Happy Friday. Here's an Irish Fest story to start your weekend with. Something to tell the lads at the pub tonight. Don't tell it to me, I've already heard it.

Saturday night late K.C. Irish Fest treasurer Ronan Collins left the Fest office and high-tailed it to the Hyatt Hotel bar to catch last call. So he walks into the bar and what does he see but one man on the ground being attended to by medical personnel and another man in handcuffs being attended to by law enforcement personnel. Over in the corner Irish Fest performer Damien Dempsey and his band are doubled over laughing. As Damo told Ronan, the two men, now indisposed for separate reasons, had minutes before been slugging it out in the bar over who knows what. One got his ankle broken in the fray with assistance from the other. So as the EMTs are wheeling out ankle man, the barman shouts that he's not going anywhere until he pays his tab. The ambulance drivers then stop the gurney so your man can fish around in his back pocket for his wallet. "I'm not paying for HIM!" he says, indicating the other combatant. So the police have to uncuff him so he can pay his bar bill. Having settled accounts, off goes one to hospital, off goes two to jail.

What did Damien Dempsey and his band think was so funny about this scene and what prompted Damo to say to Ronan "only in America!"? The two brawlers were brothers. Named Dempsey.

You might have heard Damien mention this at his show on Sunday evening. Now you know what he was talking about.

Well, we do always say that Irish Fest is a family event! And besides, every event in my clan, from weddings to wakes, end in a brawl.
