Riddle Me This

In the spirit of the ongoing Limerick contest, our own Queen of Contests Cami Travis-Groves poses this classic riddle in verse. Can you guess the answer?
Limerick has taught my children much.
My history has been nobel and swift.
The Mother guides most of my clan,
and most of them never drift.
Two Marys only lasted five years as my queen.
and good Shannon's guidance is easily seen.

What am I?
Post your answer in the comments.
