When I was a small fella there was a show on television called Murphy's Monstrous Movies. Pat and Mike Murphy, two local radio personalities, would show grade Z horror movies and on the commercial breaks would crack wise on a pseudo haunted house set. Think the Elvira show with a couple of potato heads on $25 set instead of a sexy girl and high production values. I loved it. One of those brothers, Mike, would go on to become something of a local star and one of the founders of the modern St.Patrick's Day parade here in town. He would throughout his long career on radio continue his fascination with the monstrous, discussing in all earnestness UFOs, ghosts, witches, vampires and whatever else crossed his fevered mind. I'm honored to say that I was a call-in guest on his show once after a true ghost story of mine was published in the paper.
Murphy retired a few years ago and the Kansas City airwaves haven't been the same since. But thanks to the Kansas City St. Pat's Day parade committee, for one day only Mike Murphy will return to the mic and to dispensing his special brand of lunacy. A week from this coming Friday, March 7th the committee holds it's annual kick off luncheon and St. Patrick's Day Celebration at the Muehlebach Hotel downtown. Silent auction & social hour at 11:00am and lunch at noon. Tickets are $25 and include lunch, music by the great Eddie Delahunt and friends, the annual green hat contest and the return of The Mike Murphy Radio Show.
Details, as with all things parade related, are right here.
