Band Announcement Plus

In our wonderful Irish Heritage Area, managed by the equally wonderful Barbara Scanlon and her crew, we're featuring this year displays and interactive opportunities dealing with the fascinating topic of the role of the Irish in the American Civil War. I say interactive, because we're not just talking about panels of text on foam core boards. We're talking about living history. Encampments of the Irish Brigades. Ghosts gone 143 years, standing before you and telling you what it was like to be fighting and dying for a country and a cause that were not yours when you stepped on board that wooden ship back in Cobh. The Heritage Area at the Kansas City Irish Fest is going to be an exciting, educational and entertaining place to be in 2008.

Which brings me to today's band announcement. Joining us this August is a true legend in Irish music, Derek Warfield and his band The Young Wolfe Tones. Derek spent 37 years touring and entertaining the world with the original Wolfe Tones, recording 16 albums along the way. He'll be performing songs from throughout his storied career here in Kansas City. The reason for the intro about the Heritage area is Derek latest passion: the history of the men who fought in the American and Irish Civil Wars through song. He's performed these songs at the battlefields of Gettysburg, Sharpsburg and Harrisburg, and now scant miles from our own Battle Of Westport site.

We're excited and honored to welcome Derek back to Kansas City.
