Café & Party: Canceled

The Irish New Year's celebration at Eddie Delahunt's Cafe & has been canceled.

Says Eddie: "I had to make the sad decision on canceling our Irish New Year Party. The main reason was the dissapointing advance ticket sales. Thank you for your support and here's to Next Years Event and don't worry I have your money ready to reimburse . Cheers and Love you all, Eddie & Betsy."

This may be one of the signs of the Apocolypse...

That or a sign that you can't go from $25 to $60 a ticket in one year and expect people to pay it. We love ya, but too damn much money, Eddie.

The Uptown Theater New Year’s Eve party: $125/ticket.

The Martini Corner New Year's Party: $75/ticket.

Union Station's “Next Stop 2008”: $75-$110/ticket

I could type on. However, the bottom line is you pay more to any of these and you won't know but a few souls. You go to Eddie's and you know everyone, even the jolly man behind the counter and the guitar. $60 wasn't but a mere bar tab & cover charge for for good music, good drinks, good food, good fun and good friends to spend your (Irish) New Years with. Besides, you had the chance to celebrate New Year's twice, should you have choosen. This party was quite brilliant really. Too bad.

It was $50 a ticket, wasn't it? Anyway, in case no one has noticed,
gasoline is $.93 cents a gallon higher than a year ago(roughly 30%), groceries are 1/3 higher, and I understand that we will all be paying at least 25% more for beer in 2008 because the wheat crop has failed worldwide, and farmers are growing corn for ethanol instead of hops. I expect to pay more for KCIF 2008, as well!

Give our favorite Dub a break. He pretty much lost his shirt throwing last year's shindig.
Show a little appreciation. Maybe the price was a bit steep for a sophomore effort, but a quality party don't come cheap, ya know?

Those of us in the festival business know how fast the expenses of tents, beer and food can add up. Last year's party at Eddie's was great, as I'm sure this year's would have been. Here's hoping that we'll all be there next year at this time.

I think the sad part is that there wasn't a chance for the rally monkey to come out. I mean... if there had been an announcement of any kind to the effect of "unless advance ticket sales reach a target of X by date Y then we have to cance"... I think we'd be looking at a different outcome. Of course the ticket price was worth it and even "cheap" for a New Year's Bash of that quality. Anyone complaining about that price are probably just the kind that pick their bars based on whether the peanuts are always free. I still think an opportunity was missed here for a 7th inning rally.

You may be right, but that's a big risk for Eddie to take. Especially with the weather we've been having and the cold/flu that seems to be flattening everybody in town, without advance money in hand, moving ahead and counting a big day-of gate could have been disastrous.

hey, Dan. how big is your house? can we move the party there?

Danny Regan said...

Sure thing. I'll even lower the price to $55 a head.

Is the Gaf having an Irish New Year's bash this year?

Lee tells me that they are, but had no details when I asked him last week. Might require a field trip to investigae. Volunteers?
