Warmth In The Winter

Unbelievable. Mid November already. But there are bright spots as we head into the cold, grey winter. For one thing, it's only 288 days until Irish Fest opens. And there's great Irish music to look forward to even sooner than that.

On the Friday, the 30th of this month The Irish Museum and Cultural Center and the Missouri Valley Folklife Society are presenting Paddy Keenan and Patsy O'Brien in concert at the Cultural Center in Union Station. Paddy Keenan is widely considered to be the cream of the crop among the ranks of uilleann pipers and O'Brien is a guitarist and singer of some renown in his own right. I've been known to express something less than love for the highland bagpipes in the past. No such animosity towards the uilleann variety. In the right hands it's one of the most beautiful and haunting instruments around. And there are no righter hands than Paddy Keenan's.

The show is just $15, $12 if you're a MVFS or IMCC member, $5 if you're a student with ID and free if you're under 6 years old. Need more info? Try here or here .

Dan.
That really, really hurts.

Get thee to
Winter Storm - The Pipes & Drums Concert, January 12 to hear a dozen of the best pipers in the World.

Henry, no offense intended, I promise. Highland pipes high on a heathered hillside as I march into battle with sword and shield? Love it.

Indoors? Not so much. Having said that, I have nothing but respect and admiration for the pipers themselves, most of whom are big burly guys who could beat me up.

I think the term we're looking for is
"An instrument of the open air..."
