Pre-Fest Shopping

As you prepare for this year's Kansas City Irish Fest, many concerns weigh heavy on your mind but none more so than this: what should I wear? Now, once you get to the Fest, I hope you'll buy a whole bunch of official KCIF merchandise. But that won't help you to look sharp on opening night.

Never fear, I have you covered. Or rather, these great friends of Irish Fest have you covered. No matter where you live, one of these is close to you.

Hibernian Chuck Denton and his crew at Doherty & Sullivan's Irish Goods in Lee's Summit MO have everything you Easterners need to start your Irish Fest weekend in style. In addition to a staggering collection of Irish clothing and jewelry, you'll also find Irish themed books, music, ancestral maps, pottery and Celtic art, as well as hand made Irish food. Doherty & Sullivan's is Eastern Jackson county's Irish Central and also host Irish music and cultural events. Check them out on-line or better yet, in person. If there's something special you're looking for, e-mail Chuck at Chuck@DSIrish.com and I'll bet he can get it for you.

Closer to my neck of the woods, is Sheehan's Irish Imports at 1412 Westport Road. Peggy, Molly and staff will not only outfit you in the best in the finest Irish garb, they'll have a cup of Irish tea for you while you shop. They also have a huge selection of jewelry, including wedding bands, plus kilt rental, Irish cake toppers and attendants gifts, making them the Midwest's Irish Wedding headquarters. We have a bit of a tradition at Irish Fest of surprise engagements...why not continue that and pop the question yourself? You can get started here. Do your shopping on Friday, then walk across the street to the Westsider for some live Irish music and perhaps something a bit stronger than tea. Peggy and Molly have been know to do just that and are fine company.

And of course, the grand daddy of Irish businesses in Kansas City is Browne's Irish Market and Deli at the corner of Penn and 33rd Street in Midtown. This venerable storefront is still going strong after 114 years in the neighborhood and if John and Kerry at Browne's don't have it, you don't need it. Everything from t-shirts, caps, sweats and tweeds to the best selection of imported Irish food in town is right there, stuffed into that little shop. And if that isn't enough, you can get a great sandwich, soups, and the greatest cookies on Earth while you're there. And if anything is happening in the Irish community in Kansas City, you'll hear about it at Browne's. It's ground zero for the local Irish grapevine.
