I took my lunch outside today and ate on the lovely grounds of what will soon be the 2006 Kansas City Irish Fest. While I was there, I got a sneak peak at the final piece of the site remodeling puzzle, when they ran a series of tests on the new fountain on Crown Center Square. If you've ever seen the fountain outside Kansas City's Union Station, you'll have some idea what to expect. Instead of just shooting up in the air like the old fountain did, this one dances, blows water in complicated sequences and varying heights, and can be choreographed to perform to music. If you've been to Las Vegas it was designed by the same folks who did that crazy fountain outside the Bellagio and does some of the same tricks on a smaller scale.
The new Crown Center fountain is scheduled to begin year round operation in June. In your face, Rome!
