I grew up in Ireland when there wasn't a huge amount of comedy to laugh at. There was plenty of other things to laugh at, but they've mostly been fixed now.
Pioneering a new, and ultimately golden, era of stand-up comedy in Ireland, came Barry Murphy and his friends. A variation on Irish storytelling rather than it's typically more quick-fire American cousin, new Irish stand-up is a very rich cultural experience that just happens to make you laugh. A lot.
Today two things astonish me about this year's KC Irish Fest. Not the fireworks, not the fabulous village atmosphere, not the consistent high quality of the musical line-ups, not the enormous amount of things designed for children, not the depth of the Heritage displays, not the ultra-cool Celtic High Cross or Irish Cottage. Not the amazing help from so many private individuals and businesses.
It's not any of those, and more, genuinely great things. What I'm astonished about, is that tickets to the Comedy performances this evening are still not sold out. And the other thing I'm astonished about is that they are so bleedin' cheap.
If you've never heard of any of these comedians - well, trust us. Had you heard of Enter The Haggis before our Festival? Or Teada. We do the work to bring you only the best. These three comedians are truly giants of comedy. And they dress really well.
Oh - look at the time, I've a Festival to go to.
Handy Irish Phrase: Beidh brón orainn an áit seo a fhágáil agus fill abhaile. (We'll be sad to leave this place and go home)
